In the end, the S2 was the only version sold in North America during the last two years of production in 1991 and 1992. Nearly 20,000 total 944 S2 models were built in both coupe and cabriolet form (several thousand fewer than Turbo models), but fewer than 700 found remain in the U.S., making them among the rarest 944 variants to be found today. The 944 S2 was introduced in 1989 powered by a new three-liter, normally aspirated engine. At the time of its debut, it was the largest four-cylinder power plant in series production. The S2 brought increased power output (over 50 hp per cylinder) to the model, offered an excellent torque curve, and was capable of almost 150 mph. Not only did the new model feature an integrated front bumper, the S2 made a cabriolet configuration available for the first time in the 944 range.
